  1. Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 10:05 AM by Chair Gray Thomas.
  2. Bylaws and Incorporation
The draft bylaws have been completed and are ready for board review.
  • Board members will review the draft bylaws and provide any recommended changes.
  • Once the bylaws have been reviewed, Gray will submit the Articles of Incorporation to the
    State.
  • Legal names and contact information will be required for the filing.
  • A template was used as the starting point for the bylaws, with revisions made to reflect the Arts
    Council’s goals and mission.
  • The next step will be to have an attorney review the bylaws. Gray may contact Anthony
Loubet, who previously offered to review them.
    Review Process
Gray will tag board members in the documents so everyone can confirm they have reviewed
    them.
    When making suggested changes:
  • Use Suggesting/Track Changes rather than directly editing the document.
  • Gray will review proposed changes and either accept or reject them, with discussion as
    needed.
  1. Funding and Relationship with Kearns City Council
Gray reported that he attended several arts council meetings during the month to learn more
about how other arts councils operate and obtain funding.
The Kearns Arts Council hopes to pursue funding opportunities through the Kearns City Council.
Gray plans to meet individually with city council members to discuss what they would like to see
from the Arts Council and begin conversations regarding potential funding.
Upcoming Meeting: Gray will meet with Lorrin Colby on Monday at 6:00 PM at the library. Board
    members are welcome to attend.
  2. Board Member Photos and Media
Jackie needs individual photos of board members to begin creating a “Meet the Members”
feature for the Arts Council’s media platforms.
  3. Youth Council & My Kearns Coalition Collaboration
Janet Reyes and Jadrian Rosas discussed opportunities for collaboration between the Youth
    Council and My Kearns Coalition.
    Youth Mural Project
The Youth Council is developing a mural project focused on prevention and community
    engagement.
  • Matt Monsoon, the artist who completed the library murals, is advising the project.
  • The project will use data regarding mental health and substance abuse among students in
grades 6–10 to support the prevention focus.
  • A final theme has not yet been selected.
  • The group would like to highlight family activities and community involvement.
  • Janet shared a presentation outlining the benefits of murals and the three areas of focus for
    the project.
  • The Youth Council has identified potential grant funding for supplies; the grant application has
    not yet been completed.
  • Students will be responsible for the design and painting of the mural.
  • Jadrian will serve as the primary student designer, along with another student serving as
    creative director.
  • Matt Monsoon will provide guidance but will not be involved in the actual design process.

Mural Location
The Youth Council is currently looking for an appropriate wall location.
The ideal location would be approximately:

  • More than 8 feet tall
  • Approximately 20 feet long
  • Large enough for the project but manageable within the project’s timeline
The Arts Council will assist with identifying potential locations.
    Action Items
  • Reach out to local businesses regarding potential mural locations.
  • Contact homeowners who may have appropriate walls available.
  • Jadrian will provide the Arts Council with a checklist of assistance needed so the Council can
    better support the project.
  • Send the art survey link to Jadrian so he can distribute it through local schools.
  • Add the Youth Council mural project to the agenda for the next meeting to discuss the project’s
current plans and how the Arts Council can assist.
    The group noted that a previous social media post resulted in several neighbors offering walls;
however, those locations were not in ideal areas for this particular project.
  1. Youth Council Representation on the Arts Council
Gray offered Jadrian Rosas a position on the Kearns Arts Council as the Youth Council
    representative.
Motion: Gray moved to appoint Jadrian Rosas as a board member representing the Youth
    Council.
    Second: Wendy Bean.
    Vote: Motion passed unanimously.
Jadrian will serve as the Youth Council’s representative on the Kearns Arts Council.
  2. My Kearns Story Project
Jackie reported increased engagement on the My Kearns Story page.

Miranda reported that the survey has received 35 responses to date.
Survey responses are providing information about:

  • Arts and cultural events residents have attended
  • Kearns County Library events
  • Events outside of Kearns
  • Interest in murals
  • Public spaces
  • Outdoor concerts
  • Visual arts events
Approximately 15% of respondents reported attending events such as the Easter egg hunt,
events at 801 Venue, and activities at the recreation center.
Miranda shared several comments received through the survey.
The survey will remain open through September 30.
Jackie will make one additional social media post to encourage residents to complete the survey
    before it closes.
    Story Collection & Final Presentation
Gray asked Miranda about potentially using a StoryCorps-style podcast format, similar to the
NPR model, for collecting and sharing community stories.
The group discussed how this format could potentially work across multiple generations.
The group discussed details for a potential $3,000 humanitarian grant. The grant application has
not yet been completed or submitted; however, the group has information about the grant
requirements and funding available and hopes to complete the application.
The grant would support the story collection process and requires a presentation component at
    the conclusion of the project.
Several ideas are being considered for the final presentation format. Miranda will continue
researching the options before making a final decision.
Action Item: Miranda will report back to the group with the preferred format and next steps for
completing the My Kearns Story project.

10. Adjournment

Gray is best known for crumpling up paper into a ball and throwing it behind him. This paper contains words, like a love note, or an apology (or both), the syntax of which he is never be quite satisfied with. He has fallen in love and apologized so many times that the living room and dining room of his apartment have become completely covered with paperballs. He refuses to carry them to the garbage, because he likes to be reminded of failure. There are enough paperballs to completely cover the entire floor of his apartment 5 feet deep. He has a fondness for jumping off of furniture and into the balls, swimming through them from one room to another. This activity reminds him of leaping into leaves in Autumn. Sometimes he writes love letters to the apology letters, and sometimes he writes apology letters to the love letters. Once the collection of paperballs reach the ceiling, Gray will be forced to rent another apartment. He will still he maintain the original apartment with the paperballs. He'll continue returning to it until he can discover the perfect way of saying "I love you, I'm sorry." See more of Gray's writing at graypoetry.com
